COPFS choose LearningGuide (Mar 2006)
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) is responsible for the prosecution of crime in Scotland, the investigation of sudden or suspicious deaths and complaints against the police. We work closely with our partners in the criminal justice system to help make Scotland a safer place:
Our strategic aim is to provide an independent, modern prosecution service for the 21st century - committed to professional excellence, pursuing cases fairly and consistently in the public interest and being responsive to the public's needs.
COPFS is Scotland's sole prosecution authority. We have a number of other key objectives:
• to play a pivotal role within the criminal justice system, in maintaining the security and confidence of all the communities of Scotland in the prosecution system - making the justice system more accessible and more responsive;• to improve the delivery of justice by timely, efficient and effective investigation and prosecution of crime;
• to give priority to the prosecution of serious crime, including drugs trafficking and persistent offenders - making Scotland's streets safer, and feel safer;
• to develop and provide services which meet the information needs of victims, witnesses and next-of-kin, in co-operation with other agencies - treating the victims of crime with dignity (Victim Information and Advice(VIA));
• to ensure that all deaths reported to the Procurator Fiscal are investigated appropriately and speedily and, where appropriate, conduct public inquiries;
• to provide thorough, timely, and independent investigation of complaints of criminal conduct by police officers - thereby promoting accountable and responsive policing;
• to maintain effective working relationships and work co-operatively with other agencies in the criminal justice system;
• to recover assets of those engaged in criminal activities;
• to act as the Crown's representative in Scotland for the collection of all ownerless goods, whether from individuals who die with no known relatives and no Will, or from dissolved companies, missing persons, lost property or from finders of buried archaeological or historic items.
